Problem

When creating a new CIS Hardened Image in AWS or switching Instance Types for an existing HI VM, the following message is displayed:

“Failed to create / modify instance type - The instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported“

Solution

AWS frequently adds new Instance Types to their available lineup, which may include processor architecture and other hardware changes that require review and approval by the developers offering products on AWS Marketplace. These new instances are opt-in and have to be verified & marked as compatible by the vendor.

The CIS Cloud Development team reviews AWS Instance Type requests on a quarterly basis and adds functionality to the image at that time. If a newly published Instance Type is compatible with the respective CIS Hardened Image, we will always attempt to have that Instance Type added by the end of each quarter.

A list of currently compatible Instance Types can be viewed by navigating to the CIS Hardened Image page on AWS Marketplace and selecting the “Pricing” tab. The supported EC2 Instance Types are displayed in the pricing list along with their cost.

Shown below is an example of the “CIS Amazon Linux 2 Kernel 4.14 Benchmark - Level 1“ offering.
