Problem

How can I check the latest available versions of CIS published Azure Images?

Solution

From the Azure command line run the following:

az vm image list --publisher center-for-internet-security-inc --output table --all

In your results you may see listings with this format; cis-rhel8-l1-<org_name>-01-01-22

Those results are for Private Offer images. CIS has the ability to provide a Private Offer to organizations to reduce costs of using CIS Hardened Images.  A private offer provides options for a pay as you go discount or a flat fee unlimited option.

When creating these Private Offers, a name is assigned to the offer for that specific organization.  Although that organization is the only one that can accept that Private Offer and deploy the image, the Azure CLI does show all listings.

If your organization is interested in a Private Offer to manage your costs and ensure you are using CIS Hardened Images for your part of the Shared Responsibility Model, please contact cloudsecurity@cisecurity.org
