“We have legacy systems still using AIX 6.x that cannot be upgraded to a newer version of the OS at this time” |
Solution
CB suggested wording;
While we do understand that some Members and Organizations are still using this technology, however the IBM AIX Prose content for the IBM AIX 4.3-5.1 and IBM AIX 5.3 - 6.1 has been marked as End of Life and the associated Benchmarks have been removed from WorkBench. AIX has ended support for versions prior to AIX 7.x.
As the vendor is no longer supporting those OS versions and CIS has not updated those OS benchmarks they have been marked by CIS as End Of Life (EOL). Please see this page for more information on EOL Benchmarks
CIS Benchmarks End of Life for Unsupported Technologies (cisecurity.org)
Currently, only 2 versions of AIX Pro are supported by IBM. The supported versions that are in regular support are AIX 7.2 and AIX 7.1. IBM’s official Support of IBM AIX 6.1 ended in ~2017 and we ended Support roughly 4 years after that.
Since the vendor is no longer supporting the OS, and there are no planned updates to the OS by IBM or to the Benchmark by CIS, there is no way to guarantee the hardening will still be effective. If we cannot guarantee that our Benchmarks' suggested hardenings are secure and current, we cannot confidently distribute them. Since those Benchmarks haven't been updated in 10 to 13 years, and we have no plans to shore up any vulnerabilities which have been found since 2017, we will not know if there are weaknesses which the old, End of Life Benchmark does not account for. For these reasons we have removed the content from WorkBench.
